Careers at Sea

Long-term client Careers at Sea, part of the Merchant Navy Training Board, commissioned Open to embark on a complete overhaul of their brand including their logo, printed collateral and web presence.

Our main objective was to create a fresh new identity and website with a coherent look and feel that utilised a relevant tone of voice for the specified 14 - 24 age group.

Brand development

As an information resource for young adults seeking a future at sea, it was essential for the brand to feel approachable, contemporary and relevant to the diverse range of opportunities within the industry. This also applied to the website which required a far more coherent and engaging visitor journey.

Featuring a contemporary arrangement of overlaid 'waves', a striking colour palette and friendly slab-serif typeface, the new identity was applied to a range of printed collateral before its application online.

With most users accessing the website via mobile devices, a responsive structure was our starting point. A simple and flexible CMS and a secure portal for ambassadors were also integrated. The introduction of rich content, regularly updated features, effective SEO copywriting and a clear navigation were all part of what has made this site a tangible success for MNTB.
